Classic Alps 2 Ocean Cycle – Tekapo to Oamaru is an unforgettable cycling journey through the heart of the South Island, taking riders from the iconic Mackenzie Basin all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Following the stunning Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail from Lake Tekapo to Oamaru, this fully supported adventure combines spectacular alpine scenery, vivid turquoise lakes, remote high-country landscapes and peaceful rural valleys into one of New Zealand’s most rewarding multi-day rides.

Beginning beside the brilliant blue waters of Lake Tekapo, the trail immediately immerses riders in the wide open beauty of the Mackenzie Country. Ride alongside shimmering hydro canals, across expansive tussock plains and towards the breathtaking glacial waters of Lake Pukaki, where uninterrupted views of Aoraki / Mt Cook create one of the most iconic cycling backdrops in New Zealand.

From here, the journey flows south through the Mackenzie Basin and Waitaki Valley, linking purpose-built cycle trails, quiet country roads and scenic lakeside tracks that showcase the incredible diversity of the South Island landscape. Ride beside the shores of Lake Ohau and Lake Benmore, cross suspension bridges and descend through rugged valleys carved by ancient glaciers.

Designed to offer a relaxed and immersive riding experience, the Classic itinerary includes manageable daily distances and extra time to enjoy the scenery, local food and unique character of the towns along the way. Overnight in welcoming South Island locations including Omarama, Kurow and Duntroon, where country hospitality, local wines and peaceful rural settings create memorable evenings off the bike.

Highlights include the spectacular Benmore Dam, the remarkable limestone formations of Elephant Rocks and the peaceful riverside riding through the lower Waitaki Valley. The overnight stay in Duntroon allows time to explore this fascinating area, known for its geological history, quirky rural charm and easy-going atmosphere.

As the trail gradually leaves the high country behind, the landscape transforms into rolling farmland and coastal scenery before arriving at the historic harbour town of Oamaru. Finishing beside the Pacific Ocean delivers a wonderful sense of achievement after several incredible days of riding through some of New Zealand’s most diverse and spectacular landscapes.

Known for its beautifully preserved Victorian architecture, vibrant arts scene and famous little blue penguins, Oamaru provides the perfect finale to this unforgettable mountains-to-sea adventure. Don't forget the obligatory trail end photo!

With seamless support, luggage transfers and carefully selected accommodation throughout, the Classic Alps 2 Ocean Cycle – Tekapo to Oamaru offers the perfect balance of rewarding cycling, spectacular scenery and relaxed South Island hospitality.

Grading

Introductory to Moderate
4

The Alps to Ocean is graded introductory to moderate. You will need a reasonable level of fitness with an average daily distance of 50km and the longest day up to 69km. We suggest 90 minutes of cycling three to five times a week for the three months leading up to your trip. Some of the sections are on seal or hard packed gravel and are relatively easy to ride. Other sections are on looser gravel which can be rough and uneven in places. The moderate sections over the Tarnbrae Saddle and from Sailors Cutting to the Benmore Dam include narrower tracks with some switchbacks and exposure in places. There are also plenty of hills so cycling up hills and on gravel and rougher terrain before your tour will enable you to really enjoy the fantastic riding and diverse scenery.
