Beginning beside the brilliant blue waters of Lake Tekapo, the trail immediately immerses riders in the wide open beauty of the Mackenzie Country. Ride alongside shimmering hydro canals, across expansive tussock plains and towards the breathtaking glacial waters of Lake Pukaki, where uninterrupted views of Aoraki / Mt Cook create one of the most iconic cycling backdrops in New Zealand.
From here, the journey flows south through the Mackenzie Basin and Waitaki Valley, linking purpose-built cycle trails, quiet country roads and scenic lakeside tracks that showcase the incredible diversity of the South Island landscape. Ride beside the shores of Lake Ohau and Lake Benmore, cross suspension bridges and descend through rugged valleys carved by ancient glaciers.
Designed to offer a relaxed and immersive riding experience, the Classic itinerary includes manageable daily distances and extra time to enjoy the scenery, local food and unique character of the towns along the way. Overnight in welcoming South Island locations including Omarama, Kurow and Duntroon, where country hospitality, local wines and peaceful rural settings create memorable evenings off the bike.
